About the Neighborhood

The 165th Street Mall is located in the heart of downtown Jamaica. This vibrant retail area is also an educational, entertainment and cultural destination. Some of the local institutions include York College, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Jamaica Performing Arts Center and Black Spectrum Theatre. There are numerous professional buildings including the Queens Family Courthouse and the Social Security Building. Due to the strength of its retail market, new housing developments have started being built in Jamaica. The most recent addition to the community is the Moda Modern Living complex. This 346 unit mixed income housing development includes 24-hour concierge service and a 500-space underground parking garage. Jamaica is also amajor transportation hub. The area is easily accessible by public transportation. The E, F, J, Z and F train lines originate and terminate in downtown Jamaica. In addition, the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), AirTran JFK and the 165th Street Mall Bus Terminal allow easy access to Southern Queens, Long Island and JFK Airport.

Jamaica Residents

Jamaica has a large and diverse population of over 200,000 residents making it the largest neighborhood in Queens. According to the 2000 census report Jamaica is 58.2% African American, 17.1% Hispanic, 14.9% White, 10.5% Asian and 9.4% other. The median income is $39,553.
